Departure Lounge (While_you_were_Sleeping CD Sampler Mix)

about

A rolling, introspective track, as featured on the While_you_were_Sleeping Sampler CD given away at the eighth While_you_were_Sleeping.

This track was written in May and June of 2004. The track is based around a carefully played riff that was resampled to create oscillating Juno-like pad loops. Minimal beats were added followed by a bass line which was further pitched around in Live to create the very low subby drops. Attention was paid to L/R sound positioning to try to give each sound its own space. This was a point of difference with earlier Panoramica tracks, where sounds are usually played from the center.

Departure Lounge was chosen for the WYWS 8 promo CD after compliments from other WYWS artists, notably Frey, whose musical style and professionalism I admired greatly.

The original title of this track was 'Languish'. I also thought about naming it 'Daylight Spent', in reference to the gloomy nights that followed the end of the year's daylight saving season. The track was finally renamed 'Departure Lounge' for a number of reasons.

Firstly I was leaving the WYWS collective, due to personal reasons and stress with work.

Secondly, my younger sister Rachel had recently departed for at least 2 years of life in Toronto, Canada; the farewell had been a tearful one, and while technically it did not take place in the Departure Lounge, it was a definite contribute to my solemn mood at the time.

Thirdly I was losing a further two friends to the travel bug. Becky had recently left for Europe via the States and her friend Anna was soon to follow.

Lastly, the track was, I felt, a departure from my usual downbeat/breakbeat style; this was a track where it was okay to leave some breathing space for introspective reflection.

Persevering through a cacophony of layered, jumbled observations, the listener is rewarded with a Zen experience, and blazing moments of extreme beauty.
